SCALLOPS Even though it may seem right now like we have plenty of everything, the days of cheap petroleum are definitely limited. A decrease in petroleum affects much more than transportation and home heating. Petroleum affects our daily life in many ways. It affects manufacture of all kinds of common products: office equipment, clothing, toiletries, videos & dvds. It’s necessary for shipping and travel. To live sustainably we must consider what is on hand locally & regionally. Sustainability means identifying and appreciating the richness and diversity of our region, and the knowledge base in our neighborhoods. A sustainable community is a network of neighbors talking about what culture, streets, housing and social interaction will look like without cheap oil. It means looking at what we can do individually and as a community to become more self-reliant. Local clean water supply, overlooked garden and green space, and local small businesses will all be critical for a sustainable future Around Puget Sound, there has been a great growth in regionally based groups which are addressing the need for sustainability. Volunteers are always needed and welcome! To find a community group near you, please go to: http://www.scallops.sustainableballard.org |
