Organizations that provide care for abandoned animals, conduct rescue and emergency services, and serve as advocates for animal welfare. Animal abandonment and cruelty is common in the US. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals, 5 to 7 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year, with approximately 3 to 4 million being euthanized. Many of the animal cruelty cases are unrecognized, noted the Humane Society of the United States. What is being reported in the media is only the tip of the iceberg. These organizations provide a safe environment for these abandoned and abused animals which are made available for adoption.
